Importance and Value of Dua

Dua is an Arabic word which literally means to call someone while in the context of Islamic worship system Dua is the term used for the situation where a person seeks anything from Allah Almighty. In this sense Dua is very important in the life of Muslims because Dua is like a conversation with Allah Almighty in which we put our needs before Him and ask His help in the resolution of our problems. Dua is not only a submission about our need before Allah Almighty but it is a form of worship as well. In one of the Hadith the Holy Prophet peace and blessings of Allah Almighty be upon him described the Dua to be the essence of worship. The importance of Dua has been described in a number of the verses of the Holy Quran as well. In the Surah al-Baqara verse 186 Allah Almighty says: "when my servants inquire about me, (you tell them) that I am verily closer to them. I respond to the call of the supplicant whenever he calls me." This verse means that we should always make Dua for the resolution of every problem of us, be the problem bigger or smaller. The biggest possible problem is very small for Allah Almighty.

Strength and Power of Dua in Islam

The strength and power of Dua are beyond our imaginations. When we make Dua we are in reality presenting our application before the Owner and the Creator of the entire universe and nothing is impossible for Him. Mere talking to Allah Almighty in the form of Dua is quite satisfactory for a Muslim who believes in Allah Almighty. There is a Hadith narrated by Imam Muslim that the Holy Prophet peace and blessings of Allah Almighty be upon him said that "A servant is the nearest to Allah Almighty when he is in sujud (prostration). Thus, increase your Dua in the Sujud." Since we are the creation of Allah Almighty and He has the power to do anything, we should make Dua for every needs of us related to the life here and hereafter and we should address in our Duas Allah Almighty alone. Because making Dua before anyone other than Allah is shirk which is the heinous sin. As far the power of Dua is concerned, the Dua –if that is accepted –can do anything. An Urdu poet very rightly said that: "Taqdeer Badalti Hay Du'aun kay Asar Say" which means that "the destiny of a person is modified due the effects of supplications." Allah Almighty becomes very happy when His servants make Dua before him and he becomes angry when they don’t make Dua.In the Surah Ghafir, He says: "And your Lord says, Make Dua before Me, I will accept for you. Verily those who disdain My worship surely will enter the hellfire contemptible" (40:60). Thus, Muslims should not be shy away in seeking the help and guidance of Allah Almighty in every problem they face in their life.

Benefits of Making Dua

There are a number of benefits of making Dua. Some of these benefits are being explained below.

1.The arrogance fades away: One of the benefits of making Dua is that the arrogance in our hearts will go away. This is because when we make Dua and put our problem in front of Allah Almighty we realize that Allah is the Creator of us and the whole universe. We are nothing in front of Him and since He does not like arrogance, we also should not have any shadow of arrogance in our hearts. And it is the Dua that eliminates the elements of arrogance from our hearts.

2.Every Dua of ours is accepted: Sometimes people think that their Dua is rejected which is untrue. This is because Allah Almighty knows what is better for us. Sometimes we think something to be better for us but He knows that that thing is not better for us. So, what He does is that he gives us what is better for us and He also puts our Dua in the account of our good deeds. Sometimes, our Dua is accepted as we want, but Allah knows the best time for what we want and He gives us that thing at the right time.
