Ibn Al Qayyim رحمه الله said that if Allah didn’t want to accept your dua, he wouldn’t have guided you to make one. Still, we often see that Allah does not accept our Dua. There are 10 reasons/signs that your dua is rejected.

Disclaimer: The following are general guidelines, signs, and reasons for rejecting Dua. However, Allah is the most powerful who can accept any supplication made in any manner.

Weak Dua

First, your dua is rejected because you are not asking it correctly or for something unsuitable.

• Remember that making a dua is begging for something from Allah.
• Repeating the memorized words without meaning would not be considered a Dua.
• If your infant asks for a real knife, you will not grant it to him, no matter how much he begs.

“Whenever a Muslim supplicates Allah, He accepts his supplication or averts any similar kind of trouble from him until he prays for something sinful or something that may break the ties of kinship.” – At- Tirmidhi, Riyad as-Salihin 1501

Weak Person

There is a high risk of not accepting the Dua if the person making the supplications is weak in Iman. For example, if someone is begging Allah for something but committing sins as well consistently and not improving or trying to improve anything in his Iman, it is a sign of rejection of dua.

Sinful person

A sinful person first needs to ask for Allah’s forgiveness so that Allah is pleased with him.

Being Uncertain

A sign that your dua will be rejected is that you are not convinced in your heart that Allah will grant you this. A dua that is made with uncertainty is unlikely to be accepted. A person shall make a dua with full hope of acceptance.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that a dua made with a heedless heart is not answered. – Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3479

Haram Food

If all or some part of your income or food is Haram, it is a sign that your dua will be rejected. We shall ensure that we are not earning haram, eating haram, wearing haram, or getting near haram in any way.

Being Impatient

Sometimes the reason for the rejection of a dua is being impatient. Fore example, a person might be a pious one and is making the dua correctly but he is being impatient.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that a dua is not accepted when a person says that I have been making a Dua to Allah, but it never gets accepted. – Sahih Muslim 2735

Conditional Dua

Many scholars are of the opinion that conditional dua is one of the reasons for its rejection. Recently, there has been a trend that people claim that if they pass their exams, they will be offered 100 Nafl.

However, on the other hand, many other scholars think that a dua is a personal matter between Allah and the person, so let it be on the person how he convinces Allah to award him whatever he is looking for.

Salutation to Prophet Muhammad

If you are making Dua to Allah without sending supplications to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, it is a sign that your supplications are not going to be accepted.

Allah loves to be invoked

Allah loves when a person calls to Him. Your dua might be accepted only if you repeatedly recall Allah and ask for it.

Acceptance of dua is different.

The dua of a Muslim takes different forms. The Dua might be accepted soon, might be stored for the right time, or it is because of the Dua that evil is kept away, i.e., something better is given in return, or the benefits by the most generous Allah are kept for hereafter. (Ahmad)
