Warning: This article contains spoilers for the series finale of The Vampire Diaries.
In March 2017, Vampire Diaries fans sobbed as the show reached its climax in a highly emotional series finale.
Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) sacrificed himself to save Mystic Falls and his brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder), leaving a human Damon to reunite with Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) and live out a long life together.
Then when Damon finally died from old age, he reunited with Stefan in the afterlife, uttering the words: "Hello, brother."
Those two words were perfect to end the series on, yet that final line could have been very, very different.
"The original version was, 'Oh, I see they have hero hair in heaven'. Then they hugged," co-creator Kevin Williamson told Entertainment Weekly.
Williamson went on to say that they scrapped that line because they wanted the final moment of the whole series to evoke more emotion from the viewers.
Last year, in the wake of the series finale airing, co-creator and showrunner Julie Plec revealed an entirely different plan compared to how the story unfolded on screen.
Both Stefan AND Damon were supposed to bite it (so, no Delena reunion) – but that idea was scuppered when Dobrev left at the end of season six.
"Back in season two, when Kevin and I... had fallen in love with this series and this story about two brothers who loved the same girl and the love triangle was kicking into high gear, we said to ourselves, 'When all is said and done, when this show is over, both brothers should die in the name of saving their girl and then be watching her like ghosts'," she said.
