The normal grades of concrete that are most widely used in reinforced concrete buildingsare M20, M25 and M30, Where M means mix and 20 denotes the compressive strength of concrete after 28 days in N/mm2 OR in MPa
As per IS 456: 2000
Concrete is classified mainly in the three groups:
1. Ordinary concrete-M10, M15, and M20.
2. Standard concrete- M25, M30, M35, M40, M45, M50, M55, and M60,
3. High strength concrete- M60, M65, M70, M75, and M80.
Important Points
- Generally, M10 and M15 grades of concrete are used for leveling course and bedding for footings.
- Standard concrete and concrete of grade M20 is applicable for Reinforced cement concreteworks for slab, beams, columns, and so on.
- The high-strength concrete has its applications for high-rise buildings and pre-stressed concrete.
- In the designation of concrete mix 'M' refers to the mix and the number to the specified compressive strength of 150 mm size cube at 28 days, expressed in N/mm2.
