How do I figure out how much concrete I need? ›

Calculating the volume for concrete requires using three dimensions: length times width (which is area) times the height (thickness) or L x W x H. If you are using feet as your standard unit of measurement, this formula will give you the volume of concrete in cubic feet.

To calculate the amount of concrete needed for a 30x30 slab, you will first need to determine the thickness of the slab. For a standard 4-inch thick slab, you will need approximately 135 yards of concrete.

To do this, we divide the total area by 27 (since there are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard). In this case, 2,400 square feet divided by 27 equals approximately 89 cubic yards of concrete needed for the 40x60 slab.

A general rule of thumb is on cubic yard of concrete will cover the following areas: 4″ thick – covers 81 square feet. 5″ thick – covers 65 square feet. 6″ thick – covers 54 square feet.

The average cost is $4 to $8 per square foot. The median price is about $6 per square foot. Based on these averages, you may pay $4,800 to $9,600 with a median estimate of $7,200.

If you know the depth of the slab multiply the 3 dimension but make sure you are using the same units. Here we go 24 X 24 X 0.5 = 288 cubic feet. A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet so 288 divided by 27 is 10 and a half cubic yards .

Once you have determined the thickness, you can use the formula: length x width x thickness = cubic feet of concrete needed. In this case, for a 20x40 slab that is 4 inches thick, you would need 26.67 cubic yards of concrete.
