Portsmouth is passionate about education, its rich maritime history and the success of all students. Our schools are filled with active learning, engaged students and dedicated teachers.

With nearly 14,000 students, Portsmouth Public Schools offers small class sizes with specific programs to prepare students for technical careers and college. We have 13 elementary schools, three middle schools, three high schools, three Pre-K centers, one alternative school and an adult learning center. Our First College program offers high school students the opportunity to take college courses at Tidewater Community College.

Through a partnership with Tidewater Community College, nearly 200 high school seniors have the opportunity to participate in the First College program in their spring semester. Students may also earn college credits through our Dual-Enrollment opportunities. All Portsmouth 8th and 9th graders may take the PSAT at no cost to their families.

With online and virtual learning programs, students are able to engage in flexible learning. Opportunities are expanded through Virtual Virginia where students are able to take online Advanced Placement (AP®), world language, core academic, and elective courses.
