Will I Survive Nursing School? (2024)

Are you considering going to nursing school? Or perhaps you are already enrolled and you are worried whether or not you will survive nursing school?

No doubt you’ve probably heard horror stories or how hard nursing school is, how some people flunk out, and you find yourself asking, “Will I survive nursing school? Is nursing school for me?”

The short answer is, YES!! You will survive nursing school if you buckle down and weather the storm. Nursing school is challenging, but with perseverance you can succeed. There may be times where you flunk a test (I did). You may even fail a class (many of my friends who are now nurses did). There will be times when you question whether or not you are meant to be a nurse (I know I did). And you may find yourself looking at other majors and seriously considering dropping out (I did this too).

But if you hold on to the end, it will be worth it. You’ll be so glad that you stayed the course, and that you succeeded.

Surviving nursing school will depend on your own attitude. Henry Ford, the very successful man who founded the Ford Motor Company, once said,

Whether you think that you can, or that you can’t, you are usually right.

I love this quote because it shows how much our thoughts can influence our actions. If you go into nursing school with the attitude that, “Well, I’ll give it a shot andI know it will be hard and I’ll probably fail, but oh well…” then you will probably fail. Why? Your very thoughts are already setting you up for failure.

If, however, you go into nursing school with this attitude, you’ll probably succeed: “Iam going to succeed in nursing school. If I have to repeat a course, study all day andnight, hire a tutor, or whatever it takes–I will succeed. I know I can. It may betough at times, but I know I can do this if I set my mind to it.”

Fill your mind with positive thoughts. The thought is the father of the deed. Everything you’ve accomplished thus far in life started as an idea or thought in your mind.

If you think you’ll fail, then the first test you flunk you will think you’re done and you will be very tempted to quit. On the other hand, if you think you’ll succeed, then you may flunk a test and say, “Okay, I need to buckle down in this class and get serious. I know Ican pass this class.”

Nursing school can be challenging, but it is not impossible by any means. Thousands of people graduate from nursing school every year. Some came from very difficult circ*mstances. Some were not the brightest people on the Earth. But they studied, and fought hard and got through.

If you are stressed out and worrying whether or not you will survive nursing school, let me just say: You can, but you need to be positive and determined. You need to say to yourself, “I will pass nursing school.” Even if you have to repeat that to yourself every day, do it.

Fill your mind with positive thinking, and work hard. You can succeed. You will survive nursing school at all cost. If you do that, then you will succeed. You will be a nurse, and you will look back one day and you’ll be glad you survived. You’ll be glad you accomplished what you’ve accomplished, and it will be well worth it.

After nursing school, you’ll have so many career opportunities and life will be so much better. You’ll likely have a lot more time and money, and you can move forward to the next phases of your life.
