To LoJack, or Not to LoJack… (2024)

We all know that DeLoreans aren’t stolen… well… ever (statistically.) But as we recently saw with Mike Persyn’s truck being stolen, while towing VIN #05984, it can happen. And with only about 4,000 DeLoreans left in the world, the question is, should we consider installing tracking devices on our cars? Which is quickly followed up with, ‘Is it worth the money?’; ‘What devices should I consider?’; ‘What will it cost me over time?’

After looking at a lot of vehicle tracking devices and options, the short answer seems to be: LoJack.

Q&A?

  • How much does LoJack cost?
    • $700
  • What’s the monthly/annual service cost for LoJack?
    • There are no other fees.
    • The $700 INCLUDES installation.
  • What about other tracking devices/options?
    • After checking with someone from a local Police Department here in Orange County, CA and someone from California Highway Patrol, LoJack is the only vehicle tracking system in the USA that has police vehicles equipped with tracking capabilities.
    • Some other devices have a monthly service fee between $10 and $25 per month.
    • Some devices which allow the owner to track the vehicle in real time with their computer or mobile device are either large, or in the case of trackers for trailers, that the device be installed on top a roof or other location where a GPS and cellular signal won’t be blocked or interrupted.
    • Building a device usingArduinos or other smart circuits just isn’t feasible, or consistent, for 99% of owners.
  • What’s the coverage area in the USA?
