When black wheels initially hit the market, they were more of a novelty aftermarket wheel product. Something that was once solely associated with a missing hubcap became instantly cool and aesthetically sleek in the eyes of consumers. Over time, the auto industry began to catch on to this trend, offering black OEM wheels for all types of vehicles, including trucks, SUVs, sedans, and sports cars.
So, where did it all begin? Believe it or not, the rise in popularity of larger rims contributed to the popularity of black wheels. Prior to the large rim trend, black wheels were seen as a design choice that actually made wheels look smaller. The darker the wheels, the smaller the perceived size; so, a larger rim allowed consumers to embrace black wheels without sacrificing size.
The rising popularity of white exterior vehicles has also contributed to consumers’ growing love of black wheels. Around the world, white exterior car sales continue to improve in market share. This design choice is especially pleasing to the eye when paired with black wheels and has seen an increase in OEM style choice hot off the press.
The perception of luxury has also contributed to normalizing black wheels as the classy wheel choice. This began with European sports cars that flooded the American luxury and high-end vehicle market. When brands like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Porsche, Audi, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo and Land Rover positioned themselves as luxury leaders in the American market, they brought black wheels along with them. Consumers then slowly began associating black wheels with luxury and those that couldn’t afford luxury vehicles opted for black accessories to achieve the aesthetic.
Over the past 10 years, many car owners have begun to move from chrome wheels to the more industrial looking black wheels. This look is especially popular with pickup truck owners who don’t necessarily identify with the luxury car persona. Consumers of all demographics now embrace black wheels as a way to stand out and accent the aesthetic of their vehicle.
