Importing your vehicle to India doesn’t have to be a big hassle – you can eliminate much of the potential for hang-ups and complications by hiring a transport company that is experienced and very familiar with all of India’s regulations .
When you do hire that transport company, the first thing they will want to know is the size and model of your vehicle, because the space it takes up on board a ship is important. They will also want to know whether you intend to export the vehicle via the Roll-on/Roll-off method (RORO), or in a standard container. The differences between these two methods are fairly significant, for one thing in cost, and for another in protection.
A vehicle shipped via RORO is driven on and off a ship by its own power, and is generally on deck or at least exposed to the elements in some way, whereas a vehicle shipped in a 20-ft or 40-ft container is securely blocked and lashed inside the container, and hoisted on and off the ship by a crane. The cost of your shipment will also be impacted by whether you drive your vehicle to the port of departure, or your shipping agent retrieves the vehicle from your residence. Obviously, the door-to-port service would be more expensive.
If you are shipping an expensive vehicle or a classic car to India, you will probably want to secure the maximum protection for it and containerize the vehicle for the journey, thus avoiding any possibility of bad weather or any other kind of shipboard harm that might befall it. Another advantage of shipping via container is that you can ship your household goods in the container, separate from the vehicle itself. No goods are allowed to be shipped inside the car, so all household goods must be in a separate area within your container.

International Shipping Requirements
You must notify U.S. Customs and Border Protection of your intent to ship the vehicle prior to its arrival at a departure port. At the departure port, you will be required to demonstrate legal ownership by presenting an original title, and if there are any liens against the vehicle, you must also have a notarized document confirming the lienholder’s approval for allowing the vehicle to leave the country.
In addition to the bill of sale and proof of insurance authorities will ask to see your valid U.S. driver license and registration for the car. If the vehicle is to be driven on or off the ship, or at any time during handling at port it must have no more than a quarter tank of gas. For that reason you must leave one pair of keys in the car but nothing else.

Cost of Shipping
Some of the factors that are included in the total cost of shipping your vehicle are described above, i.e. the kind of pickup and delivery to port that you choose, and the method of shipment overseas are both fairly significant costs. Then too, there will be taxes imposed by Indian Customs upon entry into their country, and the exact amount for that is discretionary. There will be variations in cost depending on which of India’s ports is the destination, perhaps Mumbai, Chennai, or Vizag. The U.S. port of departure will also influence cost because it could add significantly to the total transit time.

The International Shipping
There is a lot involved in the shipping process for heavy equipment. It takes the use of durable, high quality haulers and shipping equipment. Due to our resources, we are able to offer our customers four different overseas shipping methods. The shipping methods available to you are determined after you provide us with some details regarding the cargo you’d like to ship to India.
- Flat Rack- your cargo is secured to a metal frame that is placed atop the ship. Since this is an open air service, we may shrink wrap your cargo if poor weather is in the forecast.
- Container Shipping- as long as it’s feasible, your cargo is protected within a 40ft shipping container. This enclosed shipping method is slightly more expensive than that of our open air services.
- Roll On/Roll Off- with this open air service, your cargo must be operable so that it can be driven onto and off of the ship using a ramp.
- Lift On/Lift Off- your inoperable vehicle or crated cargo is lifted onto the ship and off of the ship using a crane.
Although all of our transport options are created with safety at the forefront, we provide each of our customers with insurance coverage according to state minimum. If you wish for additional protection, we do offer other insurance packages.
