NHS Overtime Rates paid at 1.5 and double hourly rate (2024)

If you work in the NHS and are full time you are entitled to be paid NHS overtime rates. Full time working is anyone who works 37.5 hours a week. If you work any time over 37.5 hours you will be paid one and a half (1.5) times your normal hourly rate. If you work on a Bank Holiday the overtime increases to double your standard hourly rate.

These calculations are based on total earnings per hour in the 2023/2024 financial year. Calculations are gross and do not include Tax, Pension or National Insurance deductions. The hourly rates are based on a full time salary that includes the 2023/2024 NHS Payrise put forward in March 2023.

Some people opt to not be paid for overtime and have the time back instead. This is called TOIL (Time Off In Lieu) of payment. It is at the discretion (permission) of the manager.

NHS overtime rates are only available for staff working in the NHS at a Band 2 to 7 level. Most members of staff working at 8A or above are not entitled to overtime payments either as extra hours or on a Bank Holiday. Some 8A clinicians are allowed to claim overtime.
