Mercury Credit Card Review

1.8 / 5

The Mercury Credit Card is an unsecured credit card for people with fair credit that could end up being decent or pretty bad, depending on the exact offer you get. The annual fee could be $0, and some people might get 1 point per $1 spent, but the standard offer does not include rewards.

To find out whether you’re eligible for the best version of the Mercury Credit Card or a more expensive, less rewarding model, you will need to first check whether you’re pre-approved. You can’t just apply for the card outright. You need a pre-approved offer/reservation first.

Checking to see if you’re pre-approved for the Mercury Credit Card will not affect your credit, so there’s little downside in trying. But you should definitely make sure to compare your options before accepting an offer and applying for real.

Mercury Credit Card Review Highlights

$0 Annual Fee

The exact fee you’ll be assigned depends on your overall creditworthiness. For comparison, the average annual fee among credit card offers on the market right now is just $21.58. Plus, credit cards without annual fees are available to people across the credit-score spectrum.

0-1 Point / $1 Spent

You can’t count on getting rewards from this card. Some people will be approved for offers that include 1 point per $1 spent on purchases, while other people will get offers with no rewards whatsoever. Even the maximum rewards rate isn’t very attractive, so if rewards are a priority for you, it’s best to look elsewhere.

29.99% - 32.99% (V) APR

Carrying a balance from month to month with this card will be quite expensive, thanks to this lofty interest rate. The average APR among credit cards for people with fair credit is just 26.59%, and people with good credit may be able to qualify for a 0% APR credit card.

640 Credit Score Recommended

You will need to get pre-approved regardless, but your odds of receiving a competitive offer are best if you have a credit score of 640 or higher. You can check your latest credit score for free on WalletHub. On that note, the Mercury Credit Card gives you FICO score access, but the scores are not updated as frequently as they are on WalletHub.

The Mercury Credit Card credit limit is reportedly around $500 to start, according to forum posts, and some cardholders report limits as high as $5,000. First Bank & Trust Company does not disclose any specific Mercury Credit Card credit limit information in the card's terms, though.

For the most part, Mercury Credit Card credit limits depend on each applicant's overall creditworthiness. People with the most income and the best credit scores are generally offered the highest starting credit limits.

How much is the Mercury Credit Card foreign transaction fee?

Upvotes

Maria Adams, Credit Cards Moderator

@m_adams

The Mercury Credit Card foreign transaction fee is 3%. This means the issuer will add a 3% surcharge anytime you use the Mercury Credit Card outside of the United States. The 3% fee also applies to online purchases made through an internationally-based merchant.

If you're looking for a credit card with no foreign transaction fee, then consider applying for a card offered by another issuer. A good option is the Capital One QuicksilverOne Cash Rewards Credit Card. This card offers 1.5 - 5% cash back on purchases and has a $39 annual fee.

The Mercury Credit Card can use any of the major credit bureaus (TransUnion, Experian, or Equifax) for approval. Regardless of the bureau they choose to pull from, it will always appear as a hard pull on your credit.

And when it comes to your financial activity, the Mercury Credit Card will report it to all three major credit bureaus on a monthly basis.

You can buy a gift card with your Mercury Credit Card through any store that accepts credit card payment for gift cards. Some big chains (like Walmart and Target) will allow you to do it, but you can also buy from online stores (like Amazon.com).

However, not all stores allow this, as buying gift cards with counterfeit or stolen credit cards is a pretty common practice.

I applied for this card last year through Credit Karma and received an email from Mercury stating they could not determine if I was eligible based on the information I provided (Which was the exact same information I provided when applying for my other credit cards, except they were able to determine my eligibility almost immediately), and that I would receive a notice of determination within 30 days. Not only did I never receive anything from them, be it an email or physical letter, within 30 days, but to this day I have never heard anything from them.

Because of this, I'm certain I was denied. However, Mercury's complete lack of communication, especially regarding whether I was denied, was and is a direct violation of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act/Federal law. When I tried to find the card on Credit Karma a month or so after applying to leave a review and let others know, Credit Karma had conveniently removed the card from their database. They have since brought it back, but because I am not a "Verified cardholder", I can't leave a review, which again, is entirely due to Mercury's failure to communicate with me.

Avoid this card at all costs unless you want a hard inquiry on your credit and to risk never receiving the card or hearing from Mercury.

Mercury was the first credit card offer I received after years of financial trouble and bad credit reports. They took a chance and gave me an initial limit of $3,500. Because of Mercury, I was finally able to charge a vacation and make some much-needed purchases! I completely paid the card off about one year later, and Mercury rewarded me by raising my limit to $4,000. Several years later, I'm at $5,700! It's the perfect card for rebuilding credit! The only downside is that their website is a little clunky.

This credit card company is an absolute joke. I was approved for $2000 in October of 2023. Now it's March 2024, five months later, and they closed my account due to inactivity. So, because I didn't use my card immediately, they closed my account, and my credit took a major hit. This company is appalling. Please don't even bother applying for this company's card. I wish I could give zero stars because that's what they deserve.

You receive your card, and if you do not start using it right away, they close it within four months. Having closed accounts on your credit is terrible, especially so shortly after a hard credit pull. They are just upset I did not use my card irresponsibly, carry a balance, and pay their ridiculous interest rate. I will keep my cards from other reputable banks and make it a point to let everyone know the predatory nature of the company that backs this card. I will also report the company to every agency I can for having practices in place that ultimately damage consumers' credit scores.

I initially filed a fraud case back in October of '23. In December of '23, they informed me that the fraud case was not fraud, and we needed to file a dispute case, so we did. After many conversations with countless supervisors who said it takes 90 days to be patient, I found out the dispute was never opened! Since I filed a fraud claim, it made me ineligible to reopen for a dispute. I've never heard of such nonsense. I'm out $1,000, including interest. I have never had a company not support me like this one. It's a bad card, do not get it! I'm going above their heads to get things done. I'm contacting the BBB, Attorney General, and whoever else I can to remove this card from my life.

The worst credit card ever. Aside from the high interest rate, their systems are antiquated, hold times are long, customer service is often not fully trained, and their dispute system does not serve their customers but instead serves the merchant. I sent Mercury the information they requested via USPS, and they claim they did not receive it, and closed my disputes in the merchants' favor. They only accept information via fax or USPS. I found another card and going forward will not use Mercury; it's the worst!

Hello everyone, I have been with Mercury Credit for about two years now, and I can honestly say I have not had any problems with these people or the company. They are truly the best and I really appreciate them. I will probably be canceling because of the interest rate, but they are the best, in my opinion. Thanks.

The worst credit company ever, I do not recommend it. Be careful; they are not a trustworthy company, especially when you have settlements. They lie, they charge you whatever they ask for, and after settlement, they play games. They don't deduct from your main balance and end up selling your account to collections to charge you double. Don't trust this credit line.
