How to use Android's Safe Mode to identify problem apps (2024)

Have an Android phone and are running into issues with crashing apps or slow processing? Perhaps it is a third-party app that is crashing regularly but you can't figure out what is causing the issue? This can be frustrating, but thankfully you can use Android's safe mode to try and troubleshoot exactly what is going wrong with your device.

Safe mode is one of the best ways to diagnose what is going on with your phone as it temporarily blocks third-party apps from working, isolating them and highlighting whether they are the issue causing slow processing or crashing apps. When in safe mode, if you notice a significant speed improvement with your device, this is indicating that a third-party app is likely the cause of your problem.

One thing to note before moving on to booting your phone in safe mode is to check whether anyone else is experiencing the same issues with the app/apps you are trying to use. You can do this through any app status website which you can find on your browser.

To boot you Android phone in safe mode, follow the steps below and hopefully you will get to the bottom of what is causing a nuisance on your device!

How to turn on safe mode on an Android device:

If you have an Android device running Android 6.0 Marshmallow or later, then the process to turn on safe mode is same as below:

  1. Press and hold thePower Button
  2. Tap and holdthePower Offbutton the will appear
  3. Tap theReboot to Safe Modebuttonthat will appear

Your device will now restart and you will see the Safe Mode prompt appear in the top left hand corner of your screen.

If you notice that the issue you have been dealing with has been resolved when your device is in safe mode, this shows that a third-party app is causing it. To isolate which app exactly is causing the problem, restart your phone to take it out of safe mode. Beginning with the last app you downloaded, delete your third-party apps one-by-one.

In between each one being removed, restart your phone and see if the issue has been resolved. Once you isolate which app is causing the problem, reinstall all of your apps and the issue should have been resolved!
