A beach is a beautiful place, the sun, the waves, and of course the salt water.

Years ago, I remembered my sister joking that she wanted to bottle up some ocean water to use in her hair because she loved how the salt water adds texture to the hair and tightens up wavy curls.

Making a DIY sea salt spray is an easy, more affordable alternative to buying a bottle of salt spray. This natural sea salt spray is made using sustainable ingredients and a reusable spray bottle.

Salt spray for hair

Sea salt spray is a popular and natural way to provide your locks with dreamy beach wavy hair with a light hold. Best if used after showering, for added texture and neater curls, but it can be used on dry hair for a messy look.

Does sea salt spray work on straight hair

First, I think it’s best to understand how does sea salt spray work? The salt spray adds volume to hair, giving off a thicker appearance to thinning hair, provides a light hold, and gives hair texture.

When your hair dries, the salt reaches the cuticle layer, forming little microscopic fibers between cells, and this makes curls much easier to form.

As a result, sea salt spray will not miraculously make straight hair curly, rather it makes naturally wavy or curly hair more pronounced. Believe me, I tried!

My hair is completely straight and does not curl even with different products.

I remember a time getting a perm, and within a few days, my hair was pin straight again. Unfortunately, as a result, I was unable to test this product myself.

Thankfully my sister was more than willing, and it worked great on her. She said it held up and was still looking good the following day!

Ocean water or salt sprays can give hair texture and enhance appearance. In addition, the salt can improve the curl by tightening it up.

That is why your hair gets extra wavy when you are at the beach!

Is salt water bad for your hair?

You have heard the quote, “everything in moderation,” right? Well, the same goes for sea salt!

Though saltwater can make your hair look amazing and beautiful, unless you have inherently oily hair, you don’t want to overdo it.

Too much salt can damage your hair and cause it to become really dry. Dry hair is prone to breaking and split ends because it is so fragile.

This sea salt spray recipe includes aloe, which will help balance the drying effect from the salt. Using natural conditioners and shampoos will also help hydrate and keep the strands moisturized.

Is sea salt spray good for your hair

Is there any benefit to putting sea salt into the hair?

We, actually yes, sea salt can help absorb excess oil produced by the scalp, promote healthy hair growth (again, used in moderation) and in some cases has even been known to reduce the appearance of dandruff.

Conclusion: Use the salt spray sparingly, wash out after each use and condition hair.

Best oils for hair

Several essential oils can be used to promote a healthy scalp and hair. Essential oils can be used to strengthen, thicken, and lengthen hair.

I love adding these oils into a spray bottle for hair growth or to make my own shampoo.

1. ROSEMARY

Rosemary essential oil is the top oil for hair growth and thickness. It helps to treat dry hair, as well as overly oily hair and can help prevent split ends.

2. LAVENDER

Studies have shown that lavender produces more hair follicles to help thicken and strengthen hair. In addition, lavender has a beautiful floral scent that can promote calmness and reduce stress; stress being one of the biggest reasons for hair loss.

3. PEPPERMINT

This essential oil is known for the cooling effect it has on the skin when used topically and for its refreshing minty aroma. Peppermint is also great for the hair as it promotes hair growth and thickness.

4. SANDALWOOD

One of my personal favorite smelling oil of all time! Sandalwood can stimulate hair growth, help against dandruff, and promote a healthy scalp.

5. BERGAMOT

Bergamot has been very successful at promoting hair growth when massaged into the scalp. With cleansing and purifying properties, it is also effective at keeping the scalp healthy. Bergamot has a wide range of uses, from tropical diffuser blends to protein hair treatments.

6. LEMONGRASS

This essential oil has a citrus with a hint of a woodsy scent, making it a perfect fragrance for men or women.

I make a beard oil with lemongrass that my husband loves, and he is pretty picky about having products with manly smells! Lemongrass is great for the hair and can help to strengthen and thicken the hair.

7. CLARY SAGE

Adding clary sage to the conditioner will help with hair growth by strengthening the hair and preventing split ends.

8. WILD ORANGE

I love the refreshing and uplifting aroma of wild orange. Wild orange is amazing for supporting the mood, the immune system and can benefit the hair.

9. TEA TREE

Tea tree promotes a healthy, clean-looking scalp. It can be used to help with a dry, itchy scalp and protect against lice.

10. ROMAN CHAMOMILE

Roman chamomile is a delicate essential oil that is sensitive enough to use on young children. It can help to soften the hair while adding shine. I love using this oil on my kids’ hair.
