Was Animal House based on a real fraternity? ›

The genesis for Animal House lay in Miller's own experiences as a Dartmouth undergraduate from 1959 to 1963. The film's title is a reference to Delta Tau Chi, the movie fraternity modeled after Alpha Delta, a now-unrecognized fraternity of which Miller was a brother.

In 1929, Delta Chi became the first fraternity to officially abolish the hazing practices associated with “hell week”. There are currently 137 chapters and colonies across the U.S. and Canada with over 107,000 initiates. The house colors are Red and Buff, and the house flower is the White Carnation.

The actual house depicted as the Delta House was originally a residence near the campus in Eugene, the Dr. A.W. Patterson House. Around 1959, it was acquired by the Psi Deuteron chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity and was their chapter house until 1967, when the chapter was closed due to low membership.

Beyond the laughs, the 1978 comedy Animal House was a political and cultural milestone, says movie critic Ty Burr. Its raunchy permissiveness "resonated with the more conservative forces on the campus."
