Tap water in Sardinia is safe to drink, however, most Sardinian’s prefer to drink still or sparkling mineral water. In fact, when you visit a Sardinia supermarket, you’ll often see a whole aisle dedicated to bottled water.
In the supermarkets, Bars and Resturants there’s a choice between Acqua Naturale (Mineral Water) and Acqua Fizzante (Sparkling, Fizzy Water)
In Sardinia and other regions of Italy, it is common to see Italians drinking a much higher volume of mineral water than in other parts of Europe.
The water from the tap is perfectly safe, Sardinians just don’t like the taste of the tap water, and only use it for cooking. Tap water is treated and has to make a long journey before reaching your kitchen tap, which accounts for its taste.
In the rural area’s of Sardinia, locals fill up from natural springs outside of their villages. In the cities and towns, it’s more common to go to large supermarkets such as EuroSpin where you can buy bottled water very cheaply.
Finding Drinking Water When Traveling Through Sardinia
If you are travelling through Sardinia make sure you keep hydrated, especially through the summer months. If you have a reusable bottle than you can fill up from the taps (if you don’t mind the taste), I prefer to drink water from the natural Sardinian springs. You can always stock up on bottled water from the local supermarket, which will be much cheaper than buying throughout the day in Bars.
