How many speakers does a 7 channel amp have? ›

The configuration includes seven front channels: left and right wide speakers, left and right height speakers, left and right front speakers, and a center front speaker. There are three surround speakers, including one left, one back, and one right, and two subwoofers.

A 5.1 system consists of 6 loudspeakers; a 7.1 system uses 8. The two additional loudspeakers contained in a 7.1 configuration are employed behind the listening position and are sometimes called surround back speakers or surround rear speakers.

A 7.1 surround sound setup has two front speakers, a subwoofer, a center channel, two surround speakers, and two rear speakers. With this setup, you should place rear speakers behind the listener at a 135-150-degree angle.

7.1 Channel Speaker Setup

For the best 7.1 acoustic experience, these back speakers should be positioned just above the audience's head level, between 135 to 150 degrees behind the viewer. If you must compromise on placement, it's typically better to move these rear speakers closer together and further back.

In a larger room, 7.1 surround sound is undoubtedly better, offering a more immersive experience and richer sound quality overall. But it's almost always more expensive, trickier to set up and unsuited to smaller spaces.

With 7.1, each surround speaker is broken into two channels, giving you surround and rear, but you only have one subwoofer. The numbers 5.2 and 7.2 refer to systems with all of those channels, plus two subwoofers.

7.1 systems, on the other hand, make their advantages known immediately. Increasing the number of speaker channels gives you richer surround sound, and at the price ranges they usually operate at, the speaker build quality and audio capabilities are usually way, way ahead of any 5.1 system.

The left and right front speakers should be placed at an equal distance from the screen and at least six feet apart; the left, right and center front speakers should be an equal distance from the ideal viewing position. To enhance the experience, some toe-in might be desirable.

In general, you need one channel for each speaker that you want to amplify. If you're adding a subwoofer to an existing system, then a single channel amplifier will get the job done.

Summary of Connecting 2 speakers

There are only really two ways to connect 2 speakers to one amplifier – either in parallel or series. If each speaker has an impedance of 8 ohms or more, then you can generally connect them in parallel. If each speaker has an impedance below 8 ohms, you should wire them in series.

Speakers are always louder when wired in parallel. Series wiring leads to more impedance and thus less voltage per speaker which translates to less volume per speaker. A parallel circuit reduces the resistance and impedance on each speaker and equates to more volume.
