Parenting is one of the greatest challenges we as humans will ever face. But as much as we have to teach our little ones, some lessons are way more important than others. Here are 3 of the most important lessons you can teach your children that will help shape them into hard working, responsible young adults, and avoid the entitlement epidemic that plagues the younger generations.
Manners
Teaching children to treat others politely and with respect is a foundation for having good relationships, good behavior, and a good reputation. Saying please, thank you, holding doors for others, letting people go ahead of you, and having patience for others will easily separate your child from the masses. I was recently on a radio talk show where the host said that having manners is a huge deciding factor when he
hires young people, and that he rarely sees this in kids and teens.
Accountability
We all have to be accountable for our actions and the position we are in. The younger generations seem to have no problem blaming others for their crappy situation. Believing the government should make people share what they have worked so hard for just because we should all have equal stuff, promotes complacency and laziness, not hard work and ambition. If you want to get paid more, then you need to grow your skills and do more. Your success is dependent on your ability to work hard, advance, and make smart decisions, not the government supporting you. We all have to be accountable for our actions and situation.
Independence
One of the challenges with parenting is that we want our children to have everything. We want them to be rewarded for participation, and give them everything their little hearts desire. You can’t do everything for your children. They need to lose, they need to fail, and they need to learn from their mistakes. But above all else, they need to be educated with real life skills and common sense, and taught how to make smart decisions that will promote independence and lead them to success.
Our children grow up to be carbon copies of who we are and how we act. Teaching by example and showing your kids you actually live what you teach is the best way (in my opinion) to ensure success.
