If you mix coolant colors, you can come across two different opinions. Some people do not see anything bad with it, as long as the type of coolant matches the one already in the system. However, according to experts, it is best not to mix different coolant colors - just for safety.

Important: Do not use Motorcraft® Yellow Antifreeze/Coolant to service Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles factory-filled with any other Motorcraft® antifreeze/coolant. In the case of these vehicles, Motorcraft® Yellow Antifreeze/Coolant is not compatible and therefore is not approved for use.

If the old coolant is traditional green coolant, the new universal coolant will be diluted and won't be able to extend protection much beyond that of the original coolant. One very important point to keep in mind here is universal coolants and extended life coolants are not lifetime coolants.

This is because mixing two formulas could turn the coolant chemicals into a slushy mixture, making it harder for it to properly flow through the vehicle's cooling system which could cause widespread damage to internal components and become costly to fix.

Gold is different. The gold coolant is VC7B and was used starting in 2002 and running thru 2012. Most vehicles that require the gold are no longer being produced or have already been switched to Orange. Gold is not compatible with the orange or yellow so it requires a coolant flush to make the switch.

Remember, Motorcraft offers the only antifreeze/coolants recommended by Ford engineers for use in Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles.
